Animação dos tornados e tempestades que têm assolado o Midwest norte-americano
The U.S. Midwest was hammered by severe storms for the last several days and this animation of satellite imagery from the GOES-13 satellite shows the progression of storms from May 20 to 25, 2011. This animation includes the storms that spawned the deadly Joplin, Missouri tornado on May 22 (around 5:30 p.m.) and the Oklahoma tornado event (Oklahoma City and Piedmont, Oklahoma) on May 24, 2011.
The video shows the progression of the May 24 storms moving from Arkansas, Illinois and Missouri into Mississippi, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana. The May 24 event killed people in Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, according to the Associated Press. The National Weather Service reported that several twisters touched down in Oklahoma City and some of its suburbs.
The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite called GOES-13 covers weather events over the eastern U.S. and the Atlantic Ocean. The GOES series of satellites is operated by NOAA, and the NASA GOES Project creates images and animations from the GOES series of satellites. This movie is in a large-format 720x1280 H264-encoded digital movie from the GOES-13 satellite.

Nos últimos 70 anos, os economistas têm estado focados na medição do output económico. O indicador escolhido para esta medição, o produto interno bruto, tem limitações, porque não leva em linha de conta o esgotamento dos recursos naturais e exclui os serviços não pagos, como o voluntariado. No dia 24 de Maio, a OCDE lançou um processo alternativo de medir o bem-estar, o Better Life Index, que inclui 20 indicadores em 11 diferentes sectores (Housing; Income; Jobs; Community; Education; Environment; Governance; Health; Life Satisfaction; Safety; Work-Life Balance) que a OCDE considerou essenciais. Este índice cobre, neste momento, os 34 países membros. Foi produzida uma ferramenta interactiva que permite aos utilizadores alterar o peso de cada sector de acordo com a visão que cada uma de nós tem da sua importância. Assim, podemos personalizar o índice e com ele comparar os países pertencentes à organização... e compartilhar esse índice com colegas e amigos. Os resultados são apresentados numa forma gráfica em flor. São disponibilizados, ainda, vários relatórios por país membro. A correlação entre bem-estar e riqueza
On May 24th the OECD launched its alternative measure of well-being which includes 20 different indicators across 11 sectors in its 34 member countries, from life satisfaction to air pollution. It has produced an interactive tool which allows users to change the weight of each sector according to their own view of its importance. The chart below shows the results of its headline Better Life index (which is equally weighted) plotted against GDP per person at purchasing-power parity (which adjusts GDP for differences in the cost of living across countries). Money may not buy you happiness. But it can buy a strong correlation with a fancy new index that aims to put a number on contentment.
